The kaleidoscopic hydrothermal fields of the Danakil
Dallol is a place that looks like another planet. Here, boiling hot springs push acids, sulphur and salt to the surface, creating a dazzling landscape of neon yellows, vivid greens, rust oranges and brilliant whites. Sitting around 48 metres below sea level, it holds the record for the highest average annual temperature of any inhabited place on Earth.\n\nSurrounded by the white salt plains of the Danakil, the Dallol hydrothermal field is a geologist's dream and a photographer's obsession. Its surreal mineral terraces, acid pools and salt formations make it one of the most photographed and least forgettable sights in all of Africa.
